Q |
If the bus doesn't show up for my child, how long should he/she wait at the stop? |
 |
A |
Your child should arrive at the stop at least ten (10) minutes prior to the bus arrival time. If a substitute driver is driving, the times may vary with regular route times. If the bus is late, ask your student to remain at the stop. Lateness of the bus could be due to a breakdown, blocked road, train, or someone may have become ill on the bus. If the wait exceeds 25 minutes, please call the transportation office: 739-1790, ext 2204. |

Q |
My child's bus is overcrowded. Can some children be placed on another bus? |
 |
A |
School bus sizes are stated in terms of passenger capacity for elementary school-aged children. Numbers are based on those students sitting three (3) to a seat. Middle school and high school are seated two (2) to a seat. The bus may have three (3) elementary students, 2-3 middle/high school students in each seat. It may appear crowded, but it will not be over capacity. Our goal is to fully utilize all space on all buses in our fleet. |

Q |
I see buses all the time with only a few students on them. What are they doing? |
 |
A |
Mid-Del buses make 2-4 runs in and out of our district daily. We currently transport approximately 8,000 students daily to school and home. On most of these runs we achieve 75% capacity. However, we have many special programs, (i.e. vocational, orchestra, special education, alternative education) and other programs with limited enrollment and central location that require students be transported considerable distances. |

Q |
We live very far from the school and there is no bus. How do I arrange transportation? |
 |
A |
The Mid-Del regulations provide for transportation for all elementary students living in excess of one (1) mile from school, with the exception of Barnes, Pleasant Hill, and Schwartz- in excess of .5 from school. Secondary students must live further than one and one-half (1 1/2) miles from school. |

Q |
I drove the distance in my car and we live further than the regulated distance. What if the walking distance isn't safe? |
 |
A |
Supervisors measure all distances between the property line of the home and property line of the school. Car odometers are not accurate enough to precisely measure the distance.
Transportation staff familiarize themselves with traffic patterns to evaluate walking routes. If you believe an unsafe situation exists, notify your site principal or the transportation dept, (739-1790). |

Q |
I can't see the bus stop from my house. How can I get the stop changed? |
 |
A |
Bus stops are placed at centralized locations that can be safely accessed by a significant number of students to minimize the amount of time and distance of the run. If you have concerns about your child's safety, you are encouraged to accompany your child to the bus stop or arrange a neighborhood "buddy walk". |

Q |
My child is a Special Education student. Who do I need to contact concerning my child's transportation needs? |
 |
A |
Initial transportation for special needs students is established by an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team. Please discuss these program opportunities with your child's site teacher, counselor, or principal. If you have further questions after acceptance into the special education program, call Special Services at 739-1696 or Mid-Del Transportation at 739-1790. You may also check out our Special Education Brochure on this site listed under Transportation Documents. |
