Child Nutrition
Our mission is to encourage student participation in the Child Nutrition Program and to foster life long healthy eating habits to assist students in becoming happy, healthy, well-educated adults.
Mid-Del Child Nutrition Program plans menus according to the Nutrient Standard Menu Planning option. USDA requires that meals served in the school programs meet the required-grade or age level nutritional standards. These requirements must meet 30% fat to calories and 10% saturated fat. The required levels of calories, protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A and vitamin C must be determined.
All foods are prepared using ovens or steamers. Deep fryers have been eliminated at all sites. We strive to limit high-fat and high-sugar items that are offered through our school lunches and breakfast programs.
The challenge is great! With the issues of obesity among children and the need to educate our students to make wise and healthy choices, we must step forward and set higher goals. We desire to continue to provide foods that our students will enjoy and yet offer healthy options of more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, drink more milk.
We believe that nutrition is a vital link to enhancing the student's ability to learn.
