Reading, Language Arts and English

Reading: The goal of Mid-Del Schools’ reading program is to give students the skills needed to unlock the code of text and to give them the skills to reach deeper levels of comprehension. It is also our goal to produce life-long readers who will read for many purposes: for pleasure, to answer questions, and to enhance their success in a career field.

Built upon research-based instructional strategies that are proven to enhance student success, the reading program in Mid-Del includes:

•Reading curriculum and instruction for all students.

•High School reading classes to enhance reading achievement, especially on state and national testing, such as ACT, SAT, and Oklahoma End-of-Instruction assessments

•The
Reading Sufficiency Act (RSA) program designed to provide support and intervention for primary grade readers with a goal that all children will read at grade level or above by the end of 3rd Grade

Language Arts: Language is the basis for all learning. Its use is necessary to all areas of work, study, and leisure and is not simply a passive adherence to rules and regulations. The prime objective of the instructional effort is to promote critical and analytical thinking. Mid-Del Language Arts/English teachers provide experiences in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, thereby offering students the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential in communication.

The language arts curriculum in PreKindergarten through Grade 12embodies the Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) and ensures all students are engaged in meaningful reading, discovering, creating, and analyzing activities using spoken, written, electronic, and visual texts.
