Steed Chargers Go Green for Earth Day

April 22, 2010

Earth Day was a sea of green at Steed Elementary, where students and teachers wore green to celebrate Earth Day. Many classes chose special projects to complete that would help the environment, such as recycling paper and picking up litter around the school and playground.

Steed Students Try Out the iPod Touch

As Miss Swanson's students show, learning is truly hands-on with the iPod Touch. Steed Elementary has borrowed the Mid-Del District's 25-unit iPod Touch cart to use with our students for several weeks in March and April. So far, 12 of our classes, all the way from pre-K through 5th grade, have had an introduction to the handheld technology in the library with Mrs. Hartley. Several classes have also used the iPod Touches in the classroom as well. Our favorite apps so far have been PopMath, 123 Color, KidCalc, ABC Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs (American Museum of Natural History), and audiobooks such as Dr. Seuss ABC. Both teachers and students are quick learners at this new technology.

Steed is borrowing the iPod Touch cart because we are in the process of writing a grant to fund our own iPod Touch cart and other related technology to help our students learn. We are pleased to discover that the younger kids, even PreK and Kindergarten, can use the iPod Touches as easily as the older kids!

Parents--If your child is in one of the participating classes, you should be receiving a survey in the April 5 Monday folder. Please fill out the survey, either on paper or online. Students who return a completed or signed survey paper by April 9 will receive a treat.

Tammi Sauer Author Visit, December 3

On Thursday, December 3, 2009, Oklahoma children's book author Tammi Sauer visited kindergarten students at Steed Elementary School. Sauer is the author of Chicken Dance and Cowboy Camp . The kids and teachers all enjoyed meeting and listening to Ms. Sauer in the library. We learned that she comes from a huge family, lives in a zoo, and loves to use her imagination. When she was young, her job on the farm was the "pig chaser!" She showed us pictures of her family  and her family pets--she really does live in a zoo! She read her new book Chicken Dance to us and led everybody in a fun farm song and dance. "How funky is your chicken? How loose is your goose? How wow is your cow?..."

Three students--Noah, Kaleb, and Alanna--won free Chicken Dance books, which Ms. Sauer autographed for them. We had a rousing good time and the kids had the great opportunity to meet a real author.  For more information about Tammi Sauer and her books, please visit the following websites:  www.tammisauer.com and www.elvispoultrybooks.com  .
